From the term ‘Vital Amine’, the word Vitamin has originally been derived. There is a factor called ‘ant beriberi’, that is totally vital for any life. And certain essential organic compounds are essentially vital for all the lives and no human body can synthesize these compounds. Vitamins are such an essential compound.
Among the Vitamins, Vitamin A was the one that has been discovered initially. And it is a fat-soluble vitamin made up of compounds called retinoid. And retinoid being connected to retina, a term closely associated with eyes and so, any of vitamin A deficiency naturally results in hampering eye sights. The adaptation to darkness is the primary factor that is being affected by it deficiency.
Not just eye sights, but also immunity and the growth of bone also depend on this vitamin. Out of many disorders that takes place in human body, urinal, respiratory and intestinal problems occur from the deficiency of this essential vitamin. And its absence can also result in faulty embryonic development. So, reproduction can also get affected. Maternal mortality could be the cause of this. Pregnancy can become a problem and even after that lactation can pose new problems. Apart from this, the regulation of adult genes can become irregular from its deficiency.
This deficiency is also closely connected with skin, dry skin, broken nails, and dry hair. Even the reduced resistance level to infections is the cause of its deficiency as well. The body might fairly loose its ability to fight infections. The maintenance of the surface linings of the eyes can be damaged as a result of this. It also leads to disturbing the epithelial cell growth and its repair.
Added to these, a defection in absorption may occur as well. This might in turn be leading to altered metabolism or an increase in requirements and a sizeable decrease in ingestion. While the liver of an adult can store almost a year’s reserve of vitamins, a child can store it only for a few weeks and so, children are greatly affected if the deficiency happens. This might cause respiratory disorder and troublesome diarrhea infections in children. The slow bone development can affect the growth rate and when seriously affected with illness, the likelihood of survival becomes a serious concern.
The first visible sign of the deficiency is Night blindness. This could develop into a complete blindness because photo transduction is one of the major roles played by this vitamin. Eye and Corneal Inflammation are other visible symptoms as well. Naturally, its deficiency causes foamy patches and secretions with the bulbar conjunctiva as it is mostly well exposed. If the deficiency is in an advanced stage, the cornea can become so hazy. This leads to erosions which could cause the destruction of the same.
